Visualising The Safety Systems of A Biopharma Site for Reduced Alarm Response Times

Alarm Location

Site Visulisation

Location: Ringaskiddy, Ireland
Facility Type: Bio-pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Campus Size: 8 Buildings across 116.5 acres
Systems Visulised: Fire & Gas Systems
Project Date: September 2024

PlantQuest's OneView platform was deployed to increase the efficiency of alarm location, cutting response times by 50%. Using our asset/alarm location and signal-free indoor navigation tools, the Operations and Emergency Response Team (ERT) has seen significant improvements in safety, efficiency, and business continuity throughout the site.

The Challenge Faced

Plantquest has partnered with a renPlantquest has partnered with a renowned biopharmaceutical facility in Ringaskiddy, Cork, Ireland. Operated by one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies, the lack of digitisation led to significant inefficiencies.owned biopharmaceutical facility in Ringaskiddy, Cork, Ireland. • Facility Size: This biopharma facility housed over 950 rooms and areas across 8 buildings and 6 different levels.
  • Scale of Emergency Systems: Across the facility, there are 3400 different fire and gas sensors across various mediums (breakglass units, smoke/heat/gas detectors, etc.). This level of scale created significant challenges in efficiency in alarm response and location.
  • Cost of Downtime: Emergency shutdowns caused wasted production time, cost of shut-down is estimated at 40,000 per hour/minute
  • Evacuations: Mitigating unnecessary evacuations, which disrupted production and strained resources.

The Solution

Plantquest deployed a powerful visualisation tool, our OneView platform, utilising the site's existing fire layout drawings to create an interactive and searchable map for the site, allowing the emergency response team to locate any alarming device. Using these maps, we are able to provide the optimal route from the ERT Room to any of the alarming devices whilst informing them of all access requirements within the area.

  • Comprehensive Mapping: Over 300 fire layout drawings were digitized, enabling instant access to the location of alarms, fire devices, and EHS assets across the facility.
  • Interactive Navigation: Emergency responders could locate and navigate to any alarm or asset within the facility in 50% to 75% less time. The platform’s tablet functionality ensured seamless operation even in areas with limited connectivity.
  • Minimal Disruption: Implementation and commissioning were completed with only two days on-site, causing zero interruptions to daily operations.

The Outcome

Adopted sitewide by over 600 users, our OneView platform was implemented as the platform of choice for asset location and site visualisation. Our solution led to:

  • Increased confidence of the ERT teams, allowing them to more reliably locate and fix facility issues.
  • A 50% reduction in alarm response has been experienced
  • As part of the deployment, we have integrated with a LiDAR and 360 Imagery scan captured by our partners at Murphy Geospatial, providing both remote and on-site workers with a Google Maps to Google Street View type experience for their site.
